We are born with this question planted in our head. This is the biggest difference between human beings and other creatures. Even if all our physical needs are met, we are not happy. Most of us just think that increasing the magnitude of our needs and meeting them will lead to happiness. But as a human, you will never be happy till to understand your purpose. You need to focus your life on what you really want to do and do it in whatever measure possible. If you can’t do it full time, do it part time. Just discovering what you want to do with life can take a fair bit of time, even years.
In life, we do things that are expected of us most of the time. In order to fulfill expectations we forget or don’t realise what we actually want to do. As a human being, all of us need to spend some time everyday thinking about what do we actually want to do with this life. Simultaneously, one can continue to the “normal” activities or one’s profession. Discovering the real purpose of this life should be the prime objective. Take your time, try out different things, face failures and successes, savour the feelings that come with them and then with perseverance you will realise the real purpose of your life. Once, I felt that I wanted to be the CEO of the company where I was working. I gave more than a decade of intense effort to this dream but then this dream wore off. If a dream wears off, it cannot be the real purpose of your life. Choose the next dream and go for it. Keep repeating the process till you find it. When you find it, you will know.
In addition to introspection and trying out various things, Meditation helped me a lot in this exploration. Meditation is different from introspection. In introspection, you think logically and try to reason things out. Whereas in Meditation, you just let you and your thoughts be. Slowly, the thoughts die out and you dive deeper into your own consciousness. This practice takes time getting used to, but, believe me, it is worth it. For a brief introduction to Meditation, read here. Simple Meditation – This Changed me Forever!
Once you realise the purpose of your life, the life will happen naturally and you will not need to “do” anything with life. When the purpose of life is crystal clear in your mind, you will be like Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi or Albert Einstein. What separates these “smart” people from us is the clarity of purpose. They had a clear vision of their life’s purpose and devoted their entire life to that purpose. Most of us are not so lucky to realise the purpose early in life and have to go through a lot of trial and error. That’s where perseverance comes in. Don’t lose heart and keep discovering yourself and you will find the purpose staring you in the face one day. From that day, your life will change forever and you will not worry about being smart or not smart. You will just follow the purpose with single-mindedness and life with just happen.
